Christian Couple Adopts 8 Burmese Refugee Children

By Jennifer Riley - Christian Post Reporter

Fri, Dec. 11 2009 06:00 PM EDT

A Christian couple who leads a ministry that supports persecuted Christians announced this week their successful adoption of eight Burmese refugee children.

Jim and Karen Jacobson of Michigan-based Christian Freedom International said they may very well be the first Americans to be allowed to adopt Karen refugee children who lack official birth records, which means there was no real way to determine the children’s true eligibility for adoption.

The children, four of whom are siblings, came directly to the United States from Burma’s refugee camps and had no birth certificate. After nearly 18 months of legal procedures, a Michigan judge overseeing the Jacobson’s case decided to accept the children’s green cards and immigration paperwork as “Other Proof of Birth.”

(The Jim and Karen Jacobson Family - ASSIST News Service)

The Jacobsons, who have worked extensively among the Karen people of Burma, said they wanted to tell their story to encourage other Americans who want to adopt refugee children that don’t have the required birth certificate. The Karen people are an ethnic minority in Burma. They are mostly Christian in the predominantly Buddhist country and have suffered from severe persecution by Burma’s military regime.

The Jacobsons' organization, CFI, has worked with thousands of persecuted Karen and Karenni Christians in Burma and Thailand. The organization helps build schools and medical clinics, as well as delivers humanitarian aid to the refugees. The Jacobsons now have 12 children and reside in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Their ministry provides housing, employment opportunities, transportation and food and medical assistance to dozens of Kare.”

The ASSIST News Service (photo) also gives this contact: For more information about refugee resettlement or to learn more about the Jacobsons' adoption, visit www.christianfreedom.org or call 1-800-323-2273.

Prospects rosy for adult stem-cell treatments

Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow

Medical Research the past decade spelled success in research with adult stem cells.

The one area in stem-cell research where there have been no successful treatments is research on human embryos, which involves killing a tiny human being. Dr. David Prentice of the Family Research Council tells OneNewsNow there has been progress in a related field, that of induced pluripotent stem cells that can be developed by taking, for example, skin cells and adding a few genes and reprogramming the cell so it looks and acts like an embryonic stem cell.

David Prentice (FRC)But the real success, says Prentice, has been with adult stem cells.

"We've got stem cells in all of these tissues from the moment we're born," he explains. "They're in the umbilical cord blood that we cut off the newborn baby -- and these are the cells that actually can repair and replace damaged tissue."

Research on adult stem cells is already helping thousands of people, treating such things as spinal cord injury, heart damage, stroke, and juvenile diabetes. "And the list keeps growing," Prentice adds.

Almost 80 diseases and medical conditions are now treated with many success stories, so Dr. Prentice believes adult stem-cell research now and in future years will produce even more cures and treatments.”

Adoption: The Loving and Positive Option
by Diane E. Schroeder

“Adoption is wonderful. Anyone who knows my husband and me knows that adoption has been a significant blessing in our life. God blessed us with four wonderful children through adoption. Mike, Liz, Paul, and Beka are all young adults now, well-educated, on their own (mostly), and thriving. I am grateful to their birth mothers for allowing them to live and experience all of God’s blessings and purpose that He designed for them. Their birth mothers are truly courageous women who I admire and respect.

Adoption is a loving option chosen by a young woman who is thinking of the well-being of her child. Adoption was the primary force that God used to "push" me into the pro-life movement and Lutherans For Life. How different my life would have been without the gift of adoption.

…Know that adoption is a tool used by God to solve family problems. Biblical models of adoption abound, Moses (Exodus 2); Eliezer (Genesis 15); Ephraim and Manasseh (Genesis 48); Samuel (1 Samuel 1); and of course Jesus adopted by Joseph. In unwanted pregnancy situations, adoption—not abortion—is a God-pleasing solution.”

Bus Ride, Lodging Offered to Life Marchers

“To encourage more Lutheran participation in the Jan. 22 "March for Life" in Washington, D.C., a group bus ride is being offered by LCMS Life Ministries, a program area of LCMS World Relief and Human Care (WR-HC), and the Lutherans For Life (LFL) delegation is arranging free lodging for travelers.

Titled "Roadtrip for Life," the bus ride will be hosted by LCMS Life and Health Ministries Director Maggie Karner, whose department is co-sponsoring the ride with Advent Lutheran Church in Zionsville, Ind., which is providing the bus.

The bus ride will originate in Indianapolis, and enable those interested in joining other Lutherans for the 37th annual march to ride along with Karner as a group. Reservations will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with a donation requested to assist with the costs of gas and driver fees.

To reserve a spot on the "Roadtrip for Life" bus, call Karner or Sandy Burris at 800-248-1930, ext. 1371, or e-mail maggie.karner@lcms.org

After arriving in Washington, participants may stay for up to two nights free in the homes of area Lutherans, arranged by members of the LFL delegation. Dennis Di Mauro, organizer of the delegation for the 12th year and leader of the LFL chapter in northern Virginia, said the march to protest the 1973 Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion is more important this year than ever as the country debates the health care system.

Let's Not Overlook the Adoption Crisis
Thursday, October 8, 2009 3:08 PM
By: Michael Reagan

"As our healthcare system is debated in Congress and we continue to face down pro-choice challenges in the bill, I want to take the time to remind all of us of another vulnerable segment of our population…

…In this country, there are 129,000 children waiting to be adopted. Most of those are already legally severed from their birth parents and could therefore be adopted into new families with no delays. But last year alone, more than 28,000 children were left without families.

This does not need to be the case. Improvements to the adoption system in our country have made the process smoother, faster, and less expensive than it once was. Children in foster homes can be adopted without legal complications. Those who choose to adopt an infant can be paired with their child from before birth and even build a relationship with the birth mother.

Over and over again, in personal stories and in comprehensive studies, we are shown the overwhelming benefits of adoption. Children left in foster care not only struggle with being bounced from place to place in shifting relationships, but also face a terrible struggle when they leave the system and are left with no family support, no adequate resources, and a lack of practical preparation.

Conversely, children who are adopted — either as infants or later in life — have proven that strong, successful families do not require ties of blood, and children can rebound from early trauma and experience deep healing and love.

Many of you know that I myself was adopted as an infant. I can think of no greater blessing than the family I was brought into, of the chance for a new life from the start. Every child is a gift from God, and every child deserves a loving family. As individuals and as a nation, we must make that understanding a priority moving forward.”

Dear Pastor or LFL Contact,

The special materials for Sanctity of Human Life Sunday,
January 17, 2010, are available on the National Lutherans For Life website: www.lutheransforlife.org. The new LFL catalogs also include other topics that may be used as alternative themes on this Sunday that commemorates the Roe v. Wade decision of January 22, 1973. One such series is on adoption. If you were touched by Michael Reagan’s article in this newsletter, you might want to consider materials on the benefits of adoption for the mother, baby, and the adoptive parents. These materials may be ordered by phone at: 1-888-364-LIFE. A call to the LFL staff will be very helpful as you determine how these brochures, videos, and books can be used in your church for Bible studies, Life Sunday services, or youth programs.

Merry Christmas to you and your congregation. God’s blessings to you in the coming New Year.

Great Pro-life Articles on the National Lutherans For Life Website

"Thoughts from Dr. Jim Lamb, Executive Director of Lutherans For Life on National Health Care…

…National Health Care and End-of-Life Counseling
There still exists controversy surrounding the proposed health care plan and Sarah Palin’s comments that the plan includes "death boards" that will decide who lives and who dies. Former governor Palin could have used better language, but there is reason for some concern.”

…It is also worth noting that the disputed section in the House bill covering end-of-life counseling was written by members of Compassion and Choices, formerly the Hemlock Society.

Another concern that goes along with the rationing…is what is called "futile care." Some hospitals already have futile care policies. These allow the hospital to decide when someone’s care is no longer needed. This overrides any advance directives by the patient or family wishes. When government begins controlling the money spent on health care, futile care type regulations will most certainly follow.

…National Health Care and Abortion
Debate is underway again on health care legislation both in the House and the Senate. Amendments offering language to specifically exclude abortion coverage have been defeated in committees. Without such amendments, taxpayer dollars will undoubtedly be used to pay for abortion. This in turn would result of an increase in the number of abortions.

The key phrase contained in the bills is that the plan would cover "essential health care benefits." There is little doubt among pro-life leaders that elective abortion will be one of these essential benefits unless it is specifically excluded. Also, the plan calls for subsidizing private plans for those who cannot afford them. Those plans must cover abortion. So taxpayers would be funding abortion in this way.

I suggest the following link to learn more detail about this aspect of the proposed plans.
www.nrlc.org/AHC/HR3200NRLCfactsheet.pdf

There are many reasons one might oppose national health care. But the above makes it clear that the plans currently up for debate do not uphold the God-given sanctity of human life when it comes to the unborn and infirm. These plans will almost certainly lead to taxpayer funded abortions and will grease the slope we are already on toward eliminating those who suffer rather than caring for them. Share this information with fellow Christians. Let your members of Congress know that you want them to oppose any health care plan that assaults life and, therefore, the Giver and Redeemer of life.

“Stem Cell Research and Cloning 101: A Primer
Every human being from the very beginning is the work of God’s hands in creation. Every human being from the very
beginning is the work of God’s hands in redemption—a person for whom Jesus died.

What does Psalm 51:5 tell us?
“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” Since we were sinful from conception,
Jesus had to take our place from this point and pass through all the stages of human development. Since the Psalm
tells us we are sinful from the moment of conception, we are necessarily human from the moment of conception.

Where do embryonic stem cells come from?
A 5-6 day embryonic human being is called a “blastocyst. This “hollow ball” is a tiny little girl or boy who dies when the
“inner cell mass” (stem cells) is removed....

What are adult stem cells?
These are stem cells that have matured and have differentiated or “decided” what tissue they will become. Some
sources of adult stem cells are: bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, fat, nasal passages, and the pulp of baby teeth.

What is the real blessing God has given in regard to adult stem cells?
They have been shown to be “pluripotent” that is they too have been shown to become other tissue types. We are
already treating a number of diseases in humans using adult stem cells. (… you can keep up to date on this at
www.stemcellresearch.org.)

Can Christians be in favor of adult stem cell research?
Yes. Christians are not opposed to technology or research. These are gifts from God. But research that kills human life,
even in an effort to help human life, goes too far.”

School is beginning for most students in our congregations. It is a blessing that we are all given the opportunity to stretch our minds and to prepare for our life’s work through public or Christian schools. We need to encourage our young students to pursue careers that are God-pleasing and that promote enrichment of the Christian community.

Building a Baby to Save a Child
My Sister’s Keeper
By Chuck Colson, Published Date: July 24, 2009

To what lengths will we go to save our child? One new film examines what can happen when we decide to play God.

When baby Adam Nash came in to the world in a Denver hospital in August of 2000, he was no surprise. His parents Lisa and Jack had been through four rounds of in vitro fertilization trying to make him. They created (and later destroyed) 12 other embryos before selecting Adam, a perfect genetic match for his sister Molly.

Molly suffered from a rare and potentially fatal genetic disease that can cause a failure of bone marrow production. After Adam’s birth, doctors used stem cells from his umbilical cord to create bone marrow for Molly. Today, she is in remission.
When author Jodi Picoult first read about this true-life story, she began to wonder, “What if [Molly] ever, sadly, goes out of remission? Will the boy feel responsible? Will he wonder if the only reason he was born was because his sister was sick?”
As she started to look more deeply into the family dynamics that would be created in such a situation, she came up with the idea for her best-selling novel, recently turned film, My Sister’s Keeper.

My Sister’s Keeper tells the story of 11-year-old Anna Fitzgerald, whose parents created her to be a savior for her sister Kate, diagnosed with leukemia.

The story begins when older sister Kate finds her leukemia has resumed and her kidneys are failing. The problem is that her sister, Anna, does not want to donate a kidney. She has already endured years of painful bone marrow transplants to help Kate. So Anna decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body.

It is then that audiences must wrestle with the choice Anna’s parents made to play God, creating a life in order to save a life.

N.I.H.'s Rules of Enragement...
Today (July 7, 2009) new NIH guidelines on taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell experiments go into effect, creating new incentives for human embryo destruction--cannibalizing the youngest, most vulnerable lives for speculative science. The rules are ethically irresponsible, scientifically unworthy, and totally unresponsive to the needs of patients for real treatments now. They target so-called "excess" embryos at fertility clinics and leave open the case-by-case funding of cell lines derived from embryo destruction that meets the "spirit" of NIH's unethical guidelines. For the time being, NIH has shied away from funding cells from embryos specifically made for experiments, including cloning.

This may be due to the overwhelming number of pro-life comments they received. Apparently 30,000 of the 49,000 comments were against any federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Thank you for responding to our call to comment on the guidelines! The overwhelming sentiment of Americans still favors ethical, lifesaving treatments already available with adult stem cells. Instead of promoting poor science and bad health care policy, the federal government should focus on the documented success available with adult stem cells that are on the cutting edge of treating patients for diabetes, spinal cord injury, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases.

Dear Pastor or LFL Contact,

A reminder of how fragile our gift of Life is happened at the end of June. A pro-life friend, and member of a small group Bible class shared by this editor, died while on his morning walk. This last moment in our lives can happen at any time, especially during the hot summer months. He was the youngest in our group, giving this truth greater impact. May all of you give this some thought and put your lives in order, especially with your Lord Jesus Christ. He will always be with you.

Adoption

“Adoption can be an enormously unselfish gift to a baby, not only as a way to give a child a secure, loving, stable family but to give that child the most precious gift of all – life.

“Adoption isn’t easy. It is one of the most complex emotional arrangements in which an individual can be involved. Yet, of the other options – aborting the child or raising the child as a single parent – adoption is the most child-centered. It is a healthy, realistic, and sensible choice for all the parties involved.”
Dr. Jean Garton

National Lutherans For Life has great information on adoption, log-on to their website: www.lutheransforlife.org Articles featuring families who have adopted children and a list of agencies that help match children and adoptive parents can be found by clicking on “Adoption” from the LFL home page. If you have a heart for a child who doesn’t have a permanent home, please consider foster-care or adoption. Your life and that of the child will be greatly enriched.

Two October 10th Events...

Our meetings will begin again in September when we will be planning our participation in the Pregnancy Counseling Center’s Gala at the Reagan Library on October 10, 2009. Tickets are $100 per person. Laura Ingraham will be the featured guest speaker. She will have some interesting things to say. Much more is planned to make this a memorable evening.

The PCC has finished renovation of the two business sites in Mission Hills. The newly expanded facility will soon have a sonogram machine. The funds raised will help make the Center a greater asset to the community. More children will receive a chance for life when their mothers see their little babies during a sonogram viewing. We want this wonderful Center to achieve its dream of being a full-fledged clinic. You can help by joining us for a very special evening at the Reagan Library. Call the Center for reservations at: 818-895-2500.

We are also inviting churches in the area to the Walk For Life sponsored by the Pregnancy Resource Center on the same day, October 10th. Both activities are great ways to meet others in our area that are pro-life. The Walk is especially a family affair and is a good way to witness our position on Life to the community. Call the PRC at: 818-830-2499 for more information and Walk starting location.

Adult Stem Cells Found to Cure Blindness – Three Patients Cured
Researchers hopeful the procedure could be applied to other organs

By Patrick Craine
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, June 4, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Medical researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) have used simple contact lenses cultured with stem cells from a patient’s own eye to return sight to sufferers of corneal disease.

The researchers worked with three patients who were each blind in one eye. The procedure involved scraping less than a millimeter of tissue from the sides of the cornea of each patient’s good eye, culturing the contact lens with the stem cells in that tissue for ten days, and then having the patient wear the contact. Within two weeks the stem cells had begun attaching themselves to the patients’ corneas and replenishing the damaged cells.

Within that short a span, the reported results were remarkable. Two of the patients were legally blind before the procedure, but can now read the big letters on the top of the eye chart. The other patient could read the top few rows of an eye chart, but can now pass the vision test for a driver’s license.
After eighteen months, the improvement in the patients’ vision has remained. “We're quietly excited,” said team leader Nick Di Girolamo, as reported in The Australian. “We don't know yet if [the correction] will remain stable, but if it does it's a wonderful technique.”

“The procedure is totally simple and cheap,” says Dr. Di Girolamo on the UNSW website. “Unlike other techniques, it requires no foreign human or animal products, only the patient’s own serum, and is completely non-invasive.”

Former Supermodel Gives Powerful Defense of Right to Life on National Television

     By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman

UNITED STATES, April 29, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Former supermodel Kathy Ireland, who became famous in the 1980s and 90s for her appearances on the cover of Sports Illustrated, is not holding back on her pro-life views as she tours the nation promoting her new book on motherhood.

In a recent appearance on Fox News' "Huckabee," Ireland gave an explanation of the right to life that host Mike Huckabee said was the most articulate that he had ever heard from any source (see video at http://vodpod.com/watch/1528667-kathy-ireland-on-abortion).

...Ireland has publicly opposed abortion since at least 1998, when she argued that the beginning of life at conception is a medically established fact as a guest on Politically Incorrect. However, she says, her views are becoming better known, and she has suffered some retaliation.

"I mean it's been interesting, on this book tour this week there have been shows that have canceled me, speeches that have canceled. In my first book Powerful Inspirations: Eight Lessons that Will Change Your Life, I talk in depth about the life issue and how I came to that, and as people have learned that, it's very interesting," she told Mike Huckabee on Fox.

However, Ireland says she won't back down, and will not deny her faith in Christ. "I never, ever want to exploit my faith. However I'll never be ashamed of it. I mean, it's who I am, it's my foundation, so I can't really have a conversation of real significance without that foundation, without my rock, and the anchor to my soul, without Him coming up."

Ireland is on a tour to promote her book, Real Solutions for Busy Moms, which reportedly contains a chapter on her religious beliefs. She says she experienced a conversion to Christianity at the age of 18 while reading a Bible her mother packed for her during a trip to Europe on a modeling job.

Dear Pastor or LFL Contact,

The year is really flying by. It will be summer and members of our congregations will be relaxing with family and friends. We need to keep them mindful of pro-life values. Especially, as our teens form friendships they need to remember and respect the values they have learned at home, in Bible class, and church.

Thank you for helping our members in their walk through life. Your advice and counsel are so important, especially to the young people in your church. We value you as our spokesperson for life issues.

The LALFL wishes you and your congregation an enjoyable summer.

Tragedy after Christmas:

The Holy Innocents and Martyrs (Matthew 2:16-18)

Tragedy strikes after Christmas. Herod murders babies "two years old or under" (Matthew 2:16). Abortion is our nation's Herod-like tragedy. Pro-choice, pro-life, indifferent, all must admit the numbers are staggering. In the thirty-five years since abortion was legalized in our country, nearly 50,000,000 pre-born babies, nine months old or under, have been struck down through abortion. Presently, this slaughter of the innocents repeats itself 3,200 times each day.

Another tragedy accompanies this one--Rachel weeping. The mothers and fathers of these dead children often weep in the darkness of grief, refusing to be comforted. These modern-day Rachels often sit in a deeper darkness than we see in Matthew's account because they were involved in the choice to have an abortion. The realization of what this choice really does can be devastating.

But one baby escaped Herod's sword that night--the Son of God incarnate, Jesus. His presence in Mary's womb gives value to all who reside in a womb. His birth brings hope to a world of darkness for His cross turns the tragedy of suffering and death into the triumph of forgiveness and life.

Christmas compels us to speak boldly against the slaughter. Christmas compels us to speak tenderly to the Rachels.

Your servant For Life,

Jim Lamb, Executive Director
